Finally… My New Wheelchair Has Arrived! 💜
Every five years, funding becomes available for a new wheelchair—at least, that’s been my experience. When you rely on a power chair every day, all day, for both mobility and comfort through reclining functions, it inevitably gets older, worn out, and starts to break down.
About 18 months ago, when my Karma Evo Lectus hit the five-year mark, I began the process of securing funding for a new wheelchair. The journey was far from smooth!
The company Recare supported me through the process. Ray and Tim, who had helped with my old Karma chair a few times, were incredibly helpful. After some demos and advice from friends with similar needs, I settled on the Permobil F5. In May 2023, I tried it out and loved it.
However, when I went to NHS wheelchair services, I was told—for the first time ever—that my chair didn’t need replacing, despite hitting the five-year mark and showing signs of wear. It wasn’t until early 2024 that they finally agreed the breakfdown risk was high and approved the voucher.
With that approval, I applied to Access to Work for additional funding. After nearly 10 months of back and forth, the order was finally placed in November, and in January, my new purple Permobil F5 was delivered!
Ray and Tim did an amazing job during the handover. They matched the seating position exactly to my old chair and walked me through the new features. It drives a bit differently, but I’m loving it so far!
Getting this new chair feels like a fresh start for 2025, and I’m excited for what’s ahead. I’ll keep you updated on how I get on with it! 🚀
