My name is Martyn Sibley. I am a regular guy who happens to have a disability called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). This means I cannot walk, lift anything heavier than a book or shower myself. Nonetheless I run multiple businesses, am the author of 'Everything is Possible', I have a Degree in Economics & a Masters in Marketing. I love adventure travels (including an epic visit to Australia), I have great people in my life (including my soul mate), have flown a plane, enjoyed skiing & SCUBA diving, and live independently on earth.

Today, on the International Day of Disabled People Today, on the International Day of Disabled People, I’m heading to 10 Downing Street to meet the Prime Minister, followed by a lunch meeting at the House of Lords with the Business Secretary Gareth Thomas and the @lilacreviewuk steering group for the launch of the Disability Finance Code for Entrepreneurship. This landmark initiative highlights the untapped potential of disabled entrepreneurs and the crucial role we play in driving economic growth, innovation, and societal progress. The Disability Finance Code aims to break down financial barriers for disabled entrepreneurs by: - Improving access to tailored finance products, - Providing enhanced mentoring opportunities, - Showcasing success stories to inspire and lead by example, and - Actively supporting disabled representation across financial firms. As David Raw from UK Finance said, "The banking and finance industry understands the importance of supporting entrepreneurs with disabilities and improving access to finance for all." This is a step towards a more inclusive financial system that empowers talent, unlocks innovation, and strengthens our collective future. It’s an honour to be part of these crucial conversations, advocating for a fairer financial system that doesn’t just benefit disabled entrepreneurs but enriches society as a whole. Recently, the iconic Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show returned, and this time, it took a bold step toward diversity and inclusion. Seven disabled models, including Lila Moss, graced the runway, showcasing the brand’s commitment to embracing a broader spectrum of beauty. Lila, who has type 1 diabetes, walked proudly with her insulin pump visible—a powerful statement of representation for those living with medical conditions. This milestone is worth celebrating, but it also raises an important question: how do we ensure this is more than just a one-off moment? At Purple Goat, we believe that inclusion isn’t a box to tick; it’s an ongoing commitment that requires authentic storytelling and real collaboration with disabled communities. Today was an unforgettable experience as I rolled Today was an unforgettable experience as I rolled through the doors of 10 Downing Street! As a child, I often pondered whether a building with this global significance could be accessed by wheelchair users—and here I am. The building was very accessible, with portable ramps, accessible restrooms, normal lifts, and even a fantastic Sesame lift for interior steps. I also got a glimpse of the Prime Minister’s study and the iconic cabinet room. The meeting I attended was filled with business and marketing leaders, and I loved being involved in such a holistic inclusive capacity. It was particularly great to bring the disability conversation into the mix, ensuring it remains part of the broader discussion on communication and representation in modern government. This incubator is specifically designed to empower disability start up founders by addressing unique challenges and unlocking the potential for scalable growth. I'm thrilled to share that I’m mentoring @lendocare, one of the innovative companies in this cohort. LendoCare provides accessible equipment rentals, including wheelchairs and mobility aids, meeting a growing demand for convenient and affordable mobility solutions across the UK. Purple Collective Update The Purple Collective la Purple Collective Update The Purple Collective launched recently and surpassed the 100-member milestone in just a few days! This quick growth highlights the enthusiasm and commitment within the community to make a difference in disability inclusion. Since the launch, we’ve been working closely with the community to make informed decisions based on the early actions we’ve carried out. After some insightful input, we’ve settled on focusing on three key campaigns each quarter to ensure targeted and achievable progress. For Quarter 4 (October-December), we will be focusing on the following campaigns: 1. Social Care 2. Hoists in Hotels 3. Train Travel Campaign 1: Social Care For social care, our goal was to connect with an organisation that elevates the voices of disabled people and ensures those voices are heard by decision-makers. We are thrilled to announce that our partnership with Martin Routledge has allowed us to reach that goal. The collective has already contributed by providing personal insights into what the future of social care could look like. I had the privilege of running a session at the Social Care Futures conference in Manchester with Alice Klein from the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS). With SCF regularly meeting with the Care Minister, we’re well-positioned to push forward for meaningful changes. Campaign 2: Hoists in Hotels As someone who personally relies on hoists, I’m all too aware of the challenges disabled people face when traveling. Shockingly, while approximately 250,000 people in the UK need hoists, there are only around 10 hotel rooms nationwide equipped with them. Hotels are not yet legally obligated to provide hoists, and the business case for doing so hasn’t fully been recognised. However, we see an opportunity to influence Part M of the Building Regulations, much like how Changing Places toilets have transformed accessibility in public venues such as shopping centres and stadiums. While we’ve made strides by connecting with the right people in this space, we will continue to push forward with the collective voice throughout this quarter. As someone with lived experience of disability and As someone with lived experience of disability and a long-time changemaker in the world of disability inclusion, I’ve seen firsthand the power—and the gaps—within the marketing and advertising industries when it comes to truly representing disabled people. At Purple Goat, our mission is simple: we’re here to close the gap in disability representation. Right now, with 24% of the population having a disability but less than 1% of adverts featuring disabled people, the representation is drastically under-indexed. An inclusive marketing industry isn’t just about checking boxes or fulfilling quotas—it’s about reflecting the true diversity of our society and unlocking opportunities for brands to engage with a vastly underserved market. More importantly, it’s about showing disabled people that we are visible, valued, and essential in every space—especially in media and advertising where visibility truly matters. A week ago today, I had the privilege of being in A week ago today, I had the privilege of being in Manchester for the People Power Conference hosted by Social Care Futures. The event focused on how social care can better empower, and most importantly, include its users in both diagnosing the problems and co-creating the solutions. Having met Neil Crowther, Martin Routledge and Andy a few months back, we collaborated on the first Purple Collective action right after its launch, and it was an honor to then be invited to run a session alongside the brilliant Alice Klein from Association of Directors of Adult Social Services (ADASS) on how to use media for campaigning towards a more inclusive world. I met so many passionate and brilliant people including my best friend from university Richard Currie, and I’m genuinely feeling optimistic that social care can not only work for disabled people, but for everyone in our society. A personal highlight for me was the choir's rendition of Caravan of Love by The Housemartins—a song I adored as a child and whose lyrics felt especially poignant for the day. 🎶 Here’s a glimpse of the conference with this iconic song in the background. I had the privilege of sharing the stage with some I had the privilege of sharing the stage with some truly inspiring entrepreneurs at the Lloyds Diversity in Entrepreneurship event at BAFTA London last week. The evening brought together a diverse range of entrepreneurs with one common goal: to drive positive change and tap into the full potential of talent across the UK. It was incredible to hear from the likes of: Andy Ayim MBE from Ayim Unlimited Jen Lothian from MyArk Byron Dixon OBE from MicroFresh Pamela Aculey from Just Like Me Books and Mixd Reality We shared stories on the unique challenges faced by women, Black heritage, and disabled entrepreneurs—from securing venture capital to overcoming early-stage scaling hurdles. For me, it was particularly powerful to discuss how disability inclusion is a driver of innovation, not a barrier, and to witness how shared experiences can spark new ideas for breaking down barriers and opening doors in the business world. As someone who champions inclusive change through my work with Purple Goat Agency and beyond, the opportunity to contribute to this dialogue felt incredibly rewarding. The energy in the room reaffirmed just how important it is that we keep pushing for representation across all sectors—because when everyone’s voice is heard, real progress happens.
